Whether you live in NYC or not, you’ve probably heard about Rama Duwaji, the artist wife of newly inaugurated NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Duwaji has instantly become one of the most talked-about First Ladies NYC has ever had, and with good reason. At 28 years old, Duwaji is the first Gen Z and first Muslim First Lady in NYC history. She’s also an artist, so she is a creative being at heart, making her personal style all the more interesting.
When the mayoral campaign heated up earlier this year, and we started to see more of Rama, her insanely cool personal style became a bit of an obsession. From their iconic City Hall wedding photos to her gorgeous selfies (we actually have a First Lady who takes selfies!), online chatter about how cool she is has increased exponentially. And of course, her public appearances this past week at Zohran’s swearing in and inauguration ceremonies have only served to heighten the interest in her outfits.

Breaking Down The Rama Duwaji Look
I’ve been looking really closely at photos of her outfits from over the last few years, and here are the hallmarks of her effortlessly cool personal style that I’ve noticed so far:
- Monochrome Neutrals — Rama tends to wear a lot of dark neutrals, and wears a lot of monochromatic head to toe looks, which is very New York. So far we’ve seen her wear a lot of black and brown, so it’s definitely a signature element of her style.
- Unique textures — Even when she’s wearing monochrome, the textures she chooses are so visually interesting that it gives her outfits a rich, luxurious feel. She loves embroidery, lace, faux fur, and even sheer knits.
- Y2K-coded silhouettes — I love the interesting and totally Y2K-coded silhouettes she wears — she often rocks boatneck and square necklines, which are VERY 90s / 2000s. She has also worn asymmetrical, apron, and handkerchief style tops, again giving even a monochromatic look tons of visual interest.
- Go-to boots — Rama definitely has a signature when it comes to footwear … the girl loves boots! So far we’ve seen her gravitate toward knee-high, pointy toe, skinny heel styles. She even wore a lace-up! Now, we’ve only seen her in the winter so far, so I’m really curious to see her shoe style come this spring and summer!
- Cool girl jewels — I absolutely love Rama’s jewelry. I’ve seen her wear both gold and silver, and she loves a classic hoop earring, which again is so New York. I also love her necklace stacks — she even layered several gold necklaces for her City Hall wedding.
