What NYC Recessionista Wears: LuckyFABB Day Two

When you're headed to an event at the Conde Nast Building in Manhattan, it can be kind of intimidating. You can spend hours, days even, trying to figure out what to wear ... but then you learn that the best thing you can possibly wear in these situations is confidence and a smile.

And something that's so totally you.

LOFT jeweled collar top / watch c/o Caravelle by Bulova / J. Crew bracelet (similar) / LOFT striped skirt / Kate Spade New York tights / Target wedge booties (similar)

When you wear a top like this, you don't even need to give a second thought to jewelry ... built-in necklace right here!

I picked these Target wedges last fall, and they're pretty darn comfy.  The sole is nice and thick and rubbery, so it provides a lot of cushion.

What NYC Recessionista Wears: LuckyFABB Day One

This week I am lucky enough to be attending Lucky Magazine's LuckyFABB Conference for fashion and beauty bloggers ... so of course it's a monumental task trying to figure out what to wear.

Forever 21 earrings (similar) / Bauble Bar necklace / Vivienne Vivienne Tam fox print dress from TJMaxx (similar here and here) / ESQOne watch c/o ESQ Movado / letter 'A' bangle c/o Gorjana-Griffin / moon and star bangle (similar) / Kate Spade New York tights / Old Navy ankle boots

I love this dress so much ... and when the ladies from Modcloth (who were in attendance at the event's gifting suite) told me that they were all talking about how much they loved my dress, I almost had a coronary.

It's just such a fun novelty print ... but that's balanced a bit by the fact that it's such a classic silhouette.

And definitely a good choice to showcase my recessionista ways ... the dress, tights and shoes combined only cost about $55!

The real beauty of Eva Mendes

Today was a total whirlwind of a day ... at day one of Lucky Magazine's LuckyFABB Conference, we were given a real treat: a one-on-one conversation between Lucky EIC Eva Chen and the beautiful, so-totally-down-to-Earth-it-will-blow-your-mind, just plain REAL Eva Mendes.

She laughs. Loudly. And often at herself.

She talks with her hands.

And she will literally stop, mid-answer, to show the audience how she transforms a scarf into a chic head wrap when she travels (she literally just borrowed a scarf from an audience member and did a live demonstration!).

(All images courtesy of NYC Recessionista)

She was wearing affordable items from her line with New York & Company, too ... I love that she has a passion for making beautiful, feminine and classic clothes accessible to every woman.

And that's why we love her.

What NYC Recessionista Wears: Penny Chic by Shauna Miller

So ... one of the reasons I love IFB Conference so much is that you never know who you're going to meet.  On day one of the conference, while chatting with the fellow bloggers in between panels, I met Shauna Miller of the blog Penny Chic.  And I quickly discovered that not only is she a fellow bargain shopping enthusiast, but she has a line of dresses coming out this week at Wal-mart. So insanely cool to think that a blogger is doing a line.

She completely shocked me, too, when she handed me one of the dresses to try out!  When I got home, I instantly tried it on.  The material is soft, the dress is very comfy, and it's pretty much an effortless little black dress.

One of the special little touches I like is that the back scoops down just a little bit lower than the front.  Just enough for a glimpse of my tattoo :)

The other great thing about this dress is the lace cap sleeve ... if you want to wear it to work, you can throw a cardigan and belt over it.  But if you want to turn around and wear it out at night, the lace detail is the perfect dressy touch.

This dress is definitely going to become a staple of my wardrobe.

The darts in the front are really great, too.

I'm wearing The Skater dress, which is one of five different styles. And aside from the fact that all of the dresses are classic silhouettes, cost only $20 each, are machine-washable and wrinkle-free ... they're made in the U.S.A.!

Here's a look at the collection:

I highly recommend that you look for Shauna's dress line at Wal-mart when it comes out this month!

Recap: Gap Styld.by Spring '13 Event with Kendi Everyday and Bare Minerals

On Thursday night, I left the IFB Conference and headed right uptown to Lincoln Center for a Styld.by blogger event at Gap with Kendi of Kendi Everyday (one of my favorite blogs!) and Bare Minerals (one of my favorite brands!).

Kendi put together several spring looks for the event -- and as you can see, they each include a pop of color and showcase her classic style.

The graphic blouse under the bright cardigan in the middle is definitely something I could wear to work ... and it would be perfect with jeans for running errands on the weekend.

I love the super simple but polished outfits. Personally, I never would have thought of wearing such a bright pant but after seeing the looks on the left and right, they look so chic!

Not that I would've suspected her to be any other way, but Kendi- you are so super nice and it was great meeting and chatting with you!

Another great part about the event -- Bare Minerals was there giving make-unders, again with their new spring-perfect line.

I watched as one of their makeup artists, Tiffany -- she's at the 34th street store if you're in NYC and she's amazing! -- worked her magic and brought out this girl's natural beauty with just a few simple tricks.

PS - don't forget that through Monday at Gap, you can take 25% off your purchase online with code GAP25 at checkout.

And they're also having a contest through tomorrow:
Snap a photo of yourself in Gap and share it on Instagram with the hashtags #styldby and #selfie. Kendi will pick a winning look on 2/11 who will win a $500 Gap gift card!

Recap: NYC Recessionista attends the February 2013 IFB Conference

On Thursday and Friday of this week, I attended the IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers) Conference in New York City. This was my third IFB conference, and they just keep getting better and better.

There were amazing panels, brands and experiences in attendance, and I met a lot of great people (both fellow bloggers and brands).  See below for a walk through in photos!

1) This was my favorite panel of all -- called "Keeping it Fresh: The Secrets to Blogging Longevity." The moderator was Karen Blanchard of Where Did You Get That, and the panelists were Stephanie Horbaczewski of StyleHaul, Susie Lau of Style BubbleJeannine Morris of Beauty Sweet SpotLeandra Medine of the Man RepellerAndrea Lavinthal of People StyleWatch (fellow Bachelor live-tweeter!) and Geri Hirsch & Erin Falconer of LEAFtv.  The girls were hilarious, honest and fun to watch.

2) Jennine Jacob, Founder & CEO of IFB, gave the crowd a warm welcome (is she not the cutest pregnant lady you've ever seen?!)

3) LOVED hearing Elise Loehnen from Beso speak as well ... I've been following her work since the very beginning at Lucky Magazine (another adorable mommy-to-be!)

4) This panel was called "Catching Their Eye: What Do Brands Want from Bloggers" and had Meg Biram as the moderator. The other panelists were Alle Fister from BollareLaura Ellner from On the RacksJulia Engel from Gal Meets Glam and Ara Katz of Beachmint.

5) Another highlight of the day: the CEO talk with Lisa Salzer of Lulu Frost ... one of my favorite jewelry lines. You've probably seen some of her vintage-inspired pieces at J. Crew, like this stunning statement necklace.

6) This panel -- "Elevating Influence: Content, Tools and Techniques that Drive Social Media Success"  -- had great tips for how to stand out in social media. The moderator was Grace Atwood of Stripes & Sequins (one of my favorite blogs and twitter personalities!), and the panel included Dina Fierro of HL GroupFelicia Walker Benson of ThisThatBeautyChristine Olsen of the CFDA (who just kills it on Twitter), Matt Edelman of Glossi (which looks insanely cool), and Brian Difeo of Mobile Media Lab.

7) If I had heard this panel discussion when I first started out, my blog probably wouldn't have taken years to take off.  "Business in the First Year of Blogging" was moderated by Hilary Rushford of Dean Street Society and included Elise Loehnen of BesoTina Craig of Bag Snob (their story was fascinating and she was HI-larious), Pippa Lord of Sous StyleAmy Levin of College Fashionista and Zanita Morgan of Zanita.

8) The READY blushes from Bare Minerals are amazing ... I've been using The Aphrodisiac and it's probably my favorite, but this new one might dethrone it.

9) Alex + Ani were also there with a booth full of their amazing bangles. I love the peace sign and the heart!  The girls at the booth were expertly stacking them, too.

10) They had bangles with these really beautiful religious medallions as well.

11) The new READY eyeshadows in Bare Minerals' spring collection are perfect for spring. I love the teal and the yellow-green shades.

12) Their new lip colors are insanely gorgeous ... AND they smell good AND they have a great rich, creamy consistency that doesn't feel sticky or cake-y on your lips. I'm in love.

13) Monster Headphones was there with a booth as well ... and that's when & where I fell in love with these seafoam green headphones. The sound quality is really rich (they had stations set up where you could give them a listen) and let's be honest -- I love that they match my glasses.

14) The Bare Minerals makeup artists were there doing "make-unders" and making people even more gorgeous than they already were. I love that each and every one of them are so well-versed in the products, and it's clear that they really love and believe in the brand and the products.

15) One of the signature looks of their new spring collection is a green eye with a peachy pink lip, as seen on this display. It's becoming my new favorite makeup look! J. Crew had a similar look on their models for their spring 2013 collection.

16) The conference was the perfect chance to test out (and show off) my new Essie Sleek Sticks manicure. This design is called 'Glam It On' and I got tons of compliments on it!

17) This panel was called "The Evolution of Our Industry: What Does the Future Hold?" and it was moderated by Rachel Seville of Pizza Rulez (which might be the coolest blog name I've ever heard). The panelists were Andrea Derricks of L2 Think TankDan Meehan of PadSquadJake Gallagher of GQ Eye & Esquire.comLiz Cherkasova of Late AfternoonReesa Lake of Digital Brand Architects and Mattias Swenson of BlogLovin.

18) After each of the panels, IFB and Cambridge Satchel Co. generously gave away one of their amazing bags to a lucky two-day attendee ... and after one of the panels on day two, they called my name! I won this amazing bright green one, which I am sure will be my go-to bag this spring.

19) This was my new look after I hit up the Bare Minerals booth and played around with their new spring collection -- they gave me a new blush / lip combo and I LOVE the new products.

20) Aside from the panel I really loved (the one with People StyleWatch and The Man Repeller), the other CEO talk on day two was also amazing -- Neil Blumenthal, co-founder of Warby Parker. I am dying to try their insanely cool eyeglasses now, and I love that their company is so philanthropic.

21) This little pack of sweets that came with lunch on day one of the conference was genius -- the brownie, rice krispie treat and oatmeal raisin cookie were what fueled me in the afternoon.

22) This panel on affiliate marketing confirmed for me that it was the right move to monetize my blog. "Affiliate Marketing: The Essential Revenue Stream for Bloggers" was moderated by Justin Livingston of Scout Sixteen and included Scott Allan from Rakuten LinkshareAimee Song from Song of StyleClaire Sulmers from Fashion Bomb DailyKristin Ess from The Beauty Department and Joe Adolph from Nordstrom. It was great to see someone from Nordstrom there, because it's one of my go-to sites when I'm looking for amazing pieces to share with y'all.

It was a great two days and I can't wait for the next round of conferences in September!

What NYC Recessionista Wears: IFB Conference, Day Two

Yesterday, I committed what many fashion bloggers would consider to be a cardinal sin:  I wore flats to a Fashion Week event! Eeek! Can you sense the sarcasm in my voice? :)

In all honesty, I just felt like rocking a flat motorcycle boot to day two of the IFB Conference. Some days, you just feel like being comfortable. And these grunge style boots -- which are insanely comfortable -- remind me of my childhood. The rest of my outfit had a decidedly 90s feel to it, too ... think Cher in Clueless.

Ross Simon pearl earrings (similar) / J. Crew Factory button-down shirt (similar) and sweater (similar) / Chloe and Isabel necklace / J. Crew bracelet (similar) / watch c/o Caravelle by Bulova / LOFT skirt (similar) / LOFT tights / J. Crew thigh highs (similar) / Clarks boots

I've had these two items -- this sweater and this skirt -- for a long time, and NEVER thought of pairing them together. How ridiculous is that?  It's a tweed mini-skirt in earth tones and an oatmeal colored sweater ... I should've been wearing these together all along!

I guess it helps sometimes to have one of those mornings where you're pulling random items out of your closet ... you never know what might inspire a new outfit.

What NYC Recessionista Wears: IFB Conference, Day One

I'll be recapping my entire experience from the two-day Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB) Conference on Friday ... but for now I wanted to share my outfit from day one :)

Earrings by NansGlam on Etsy / H&M dress (similar here and here) / LOFT cardigan / necklace c/o NY & Company (similar)  / J. Crew bracelets (similar here and here) / Anthropologie bracelet (similar) / bracelet c/o Ann Taylor spring 2013 (similar) / wishbone bracelet c/o Julep (similar) / watch c/o Caravelle by Bulova / J. Crew Factory tights / Clarks boots

I instantly loved this dress when I saw it -- it reminded me of the dress that designer Patricia came up with the first week on Project Runway.

I love the full skirt -- I feel really sassy in this dress!  I love the full skirt, the pleats and the abstract pattern.

Greetings from IFB . . .

Greetings, my lovelies!  Hope your week is going fabulously well!

I am so psyched to be attending Independent Fashion Bloggers' two-day IFBCON, a.k.a. the IFB Conference.

Today and tomorrow, I'll be tweeting and instagram-ing up a storm straight from the conference, sharing tidbits from the panels, booths and more. And be sure to check out the blog on Friday for a full recap.

GIVEAWAY - Celebrate National Chocolate Day with Epiphany Chocolates

When I attended the LuckyFABB Conference back in September, I was of course totally jazzed to rummage through my gift bag when I got home.  And when I saw the little brown box from Epiphany Chocolates, I knew they weren't going to last very long in our apartment. My husband and I cut each of the pieces in half so we could both sample all of the flavors that were in there: Grande Diva (dark chocolate fudge), The Starlet (sea salt caramel), and Dreamysicle (orange creme fudge). All of them were delish, but the orange creme fudge was hands down my favorite. My only complaint was that they disappeared too soon :)

So, to celebrate National Chocolate Day, which is happening in JUST THREE DAYS (October 28th), I wanted to share some goodies from Epiphany Chocolates with you!

Epiphany Chocolates is giving one lucky reader 18 incredibly yummy pieces from their new Love Pie? Eat Chocolate collection (shown below), which has three mouth-watering flavors:
  • Pumpkin Pie Fudge: Leave your scarf at home and let this charming fall favorite melt your heart. This combination of creamy pumpkin fudge wrapped in milk chocolate and heavenly pecan nougats is one toasty love affair that’ll last all year long.
  • Maple Pecan Sweet Potato Pie Fudge: Forget the fork and prepare to fall in love with the most surprising pie ever. Just like your mama used to make, this maple pecan milk fudge has a hint of sweet potato while candied pecans, maple and nutmeg take this nugget up a notch. All of your favorite fall flavors bundled into one…you may just keep this sweetie pie all to yourself.
  • Apple Cinnamon Pie Fudge: Avert the culinary crisis and serve a slice of apple cinnamon pie covered in milk chocolate with shortbread crumbs and a pinch of cinnamon on top. No apron necessary and absolutely grandma-approved.
