Wedding hairdo indecision

For as long as I was planning to wear my hair up, am now thinking of wearing it down ... well, half down. I can't make up my darn mind! Help!

Our wedding flowers

I officially ordered the bouquets & such this morning ... yay! I can't wait to see them in person because they look amazing in the pictures --

Here's my bouquet, which you probably remember from previous posts:

And here's what the bridesmaids bouquets look like:

And I am surprising my flower-girl-turned-junior bridesmaid-because-she's-a-big-girl-now-niece with a bouquet as well ... can't wait to tell her :)

And here are the wrist corsages for the moms, grandmom, aunt / godmother, and our officiant:

Again, SongsFromTheGarden on Etsy was just wonderful to work with -- they didn't care how many times I wanted to tweak something or add something else to the growing order, they are fabulous!

40% off at LOFT still going strong

The 40% off sale at LOFT that I blogged about last week is still going strong.

Banana Republic Dress Sale

Very cool news from Racked -- they've informed us that all regular-priced dresses at Banana Republic are $75, but just for today only.

My mom on her wedding day

Over the weekend, when I was in the car with my mom on the way to my first dress fitting, I asked her if she was nervous before her first fitting back when she was getting married.

She paused for a minute and said she didn't even really remember her dress fittings ... but she said she did remember freaking out when she picked up her dress the week of the wedding to take it home --- apparently some of the appliques (which back in the day were glued on) were falling off. She frantically borrowed my aunt's car to go back to the dress store and had to wait while they were all hand-sewn on by the seamstress. In the end, all was well and my parents' wedding day went off without any major catastrophes.

Here's what my mom looked like on her wedding day -- May 28th, 1977.

My mom's 60s style

Yesterday while I was upstate visiting with family, I was checking out some old pictures and came across this one of my mom at age 13, which would have been in 1964.

Is she not just perfect for a cameo on Mad Men this season?! I so wish she still had those glasses, so I could borrow them.

Re-cap of my first dress fitting

Yesterday, I had my first fitting and it went pretty well. Since I had all of these questions running through my mind in my last post, I figured I'd share the answers now :)

Is it still going to fit?
The answer to this question is yes -- it still fit. Funnily enough though, I got quite a scare when the zipper came off the track. The seamstress is going to replace it altogether before the next fitting ... apparently it's a really common thing to have happen, especially on a floor sample I suppose. I am glad it happened at one of the fittings though and not on wedding day. The seamstress did say that if I lose about 7-8 pounds, it will really make a huge difference in the way everything falls, but that 10 or even 15 pounds is probably too much... and I really don't want to create even more alterations. Yesterday they basically focused on the hemline (since they know my height won't change), and then I guess they'll work on the other alterations at my next fitting scheduled for the end of August.

Am I still going to love it as much as I did the last time?
The answer to this question is also yes ... I absolutely LOVE the dress. I am not going to post pictures here until after the big day, because my future hubby does read this blog from time to time, and he doesn't want to know a thing about my dress. I felt beautiful in it.

Are all the accessories I bought to go with it really going to go with it?
The very bridal-y vintage earrings I bought are absolutely perfect with the dress. The very dramatic J. Crew earrings I bought on a whim, however -- they're just a little too much for our wedding vibe. They're very "Saturday night" and our wedding is very "Sunday afternoon" ... does that make sense? The shoes are perfect. I plan to keep wearing them around the house to break them in and stretch them out a little. I am pretty sure I will still wear the bracelet I bought ... it's a great fall orange / amber / copper kind of color... found it at one of the last J. Crew sample sales and I realize I never took a picture of it... will have to do that soon and share! I am not sure that I will still wear the hair pin I won ... I am just not sure it works with my dress and the rest of my look afterall. I am now looking at some other options.

Am I suddenly going to want a veil?
I am also going to keep the details surrounding the answer to this question to myself ... but I will say that I have made a decision that I am very happy with :)

My first dress fitting

Tomorrow morning, I will see my wedding dress again for the first time since November 1st, 2009, when I tried it on a second time and we decided to buy it (and when I say 'we' I mean my parents who refused to let me pay for my own dress).

There are a lot of emotions running through my head this morning as I think about the fitting tomorrow:

Is it still going to fit?
I haven't really been a good bride-to-be and started dieting yet, so I am really hoping it's still going to fit as well as it did the first / last time I tried it on. I figure it's okay though-- I still have a lot of time (107 days to be exact) so my weight is probably going to fluctuate a little anyways between now and my future fittings, especially since I am one of those people who cannot eat when they're stressed.

Am I still going to love it as much as I did the last time?
I hope the answer to this question is yes, without any doubt in my mind. I tried on LOTS OF DRESSES, and I remember this dress giving me a feeling like none of the other dresses I checked out. Hopefully, when the lovely folks at the boutique take the dress out of its garment bag tomorrow and I put it on, I'll get some serious deja vu.

Are all the accessories I bought to go with it really going to go with it?
I have honestly collected too many accessories -- earrings (two pairs!), shoes, a bracelet, and I also won a custom hair pin in a contest, all of which I will be bringing with me tomorrow to try on with the dress.

Am I suddenly going to want a veil?
I am also going to look at veils tomorrow, and I am wondering how I am going to feel about them. Will I even want one? Will I surprise myself if I end up falling in love with a type of veil I never would have pictured myself wearing? Will I love the style veil I keep picturing in my mind as much in person as I do in pictures?

Anyway, I'll be sure to update y'all on how the first fitting goes.

40% off at LOFT

Last night, during the impossibly hot evening we were having in NYC, I decided to do some shopping ... don't ask me why. Needed some retail therapy I guess, and I didn't care about the temperature.

Anyway, I strolled into LOFT and discovered that they were having a 40% off sale that I wouldn't have learned about via e-mail until early this morning. Literally everything in the store is 40% off, and there isn't a clear end date to this sale so I am not sure how long it will be around.

I tried on some of their new arrivals, but a lot of them were in the lighter colors that I just cannot pull off with my fair skin. Out of all the things I could have bought, I ended up with this rosette feather pin which is could be really cute to add to a dress, cardigan, or even a jacket.

... and I also picked up a couple of their essential tanks which are 2 for $20 in the store and come in a whole mess of colors. Anyway, lots of cute new stuff there, so check it out.

NYCR Picks from the July 2010 Magazines

I feel like every July issue I saw was a bargain issue... which makes me very happy of course! Lots of great buys to share with y'all --

From People StyleWatch:

These fabric colored necklaces are such a effortless little piece to throw on to add some visual interest to an outfit.

These black and white wedges look like they're from another era. I read somewhere recently that Grace Kelly loved espadrilles ... I could totally see her wearing those.

I love the silhouette of this eyelet dress ... gives you a nice waist and hides any "indiscretions" underneath :) And the color is so bright and cheerful.

I love the braided straps of this print dress ... such a great little detail.

These flower sandals totally remind me of the embellished flat sandals from J. Crew ... but the price-point is much better.

From Lucky:

This ringed necklace is so darn chic that Mila Jovovich is wearing it on the cover.

This silk dress has such a great cut to it, and it's dressy without feeling like it takes too much effort to wear.

Like it wasn't enough of a bargain that this tiered cotton dress was originally priced at just $58, it's now on sale for a measly $14.

This faux croc tote, which is totally perfect for work, looks like it cost hundreds of dollars, yet it's well under $100.

There is so much that I love about this cropped jacket ... the breezy fabric, the ruffles, the edgy twist of the zipper, the eyelet fabric, the blush tone ... it just all works.

From Glamour:

I love the old school floral prints on these bangles ... just perfect for spring and summer.

I absolutely LOVE these earrings ... the teardrop shape in that turquoise color is just gorgeous.

(Image courtesy of Sweetie Pie Jewelry)

This military style belt would be perfect matched with a really feminine floral dress.

From InStyle:

The name of this dress is totally perfect --- the Picnic In Paradise dress. Such a great vintage style to it.

The apple green accent on this watch is just adorable ... love how it's sporty, and dressy, and fun all at once.

One of my favorite things to stock up on @ J. Crew are their cropped pants ... and this denim pair is no exception.

Why artificial wedding flowers?

Update from NYC Recessionista:

Hi all ... Kerry left a comment asking me a great question, which I wanted to answer for y'all. She asked why we decided to go with artificial flowers for our wedding ... and there are a few reasons:

1) Lots of people in my immediate family have bad allergies ... this includes my dad, sister / MOH, my grandmother, etc. so I definitely didn't want to have anything around that was going to have my VIP guests sneezing and their eyes watering. Their eyes will be watering enough as it is :)

2) We're not having floral centerpieces, either -- most brides use flowers throughout their wedding as their centerpieces and ceremony / reception decor, so usually that involves coordinating lots of beautiful fresh flowers, and then usually it makes sense to go with fresh as opposed to artificial. We're actually filling wooden baskets of apples for the tables, so that takes care of that. The only part of the wedding where we'll be using fresh flowers will be for the guests to toss at us after the ceremony ... figured we'd go with some beautiful orange rose petals.

3) That dirty 'B' word ... Budget ... the cost of fresh flowers vs. artificial / silk flowers for the bouquets was a huge factor for me. Wedding flowers can run into the thousands of dollars depending on what you want ... and I know they're totally beautiful, and I would go the fresh route if I had it in my budget, but to be honest, flowers wilt and die. I hate saying that, but it's true ... I thought to myself, do I really want to spend all that money on something that's going to wilt and die, when I could be spending it on something else. I hated thinking and feeling that way, but now, knowing how beautiful they're going to look, and that I can take my bouquet and put it into a vase afterwards to keep, I know I made the right choice.

4) Availability of the flowers I wanted --- Ranunculus was my #1 choice for flowers ... and then I found out it's out of season when we're getting married. Which brings me to #3 ... budget. Could I afford to have my special flowers imported from somewhere out of season? Nope. Was I willing to look at other flowers? Nope :)

5) Who's going to know? Except of course all of you :) My sister used artificial flowers for her wedding, and honestly, no one could even tell the difference. No one knew that my sister's bouquet was artificial, or that the bridesmaids bouquets were artificial either.

Sure, if you picked up the thing and examined it, you could tell after like 5 seconds, but who's going to be looking that closely? Hopefully our guests will be too busy enjoying themselves to be worried about such minutiae!

Earlier on A Recessionists Ties The Knot:

I am so excited, the amazing flowers that are being made for our wedding are being completed this week, and I cannot wait to see the finished product :)

Seriously, if you're looking to go the artificial / silks route for your wedding flowers, I highly recommend checking out SongsFromTheGarden on Etsy. Beautiful!

5 Questions with Alfred Angelo

Michael Shettel, Designer for Alfred Angelo, recently answered 5 questions for me which I am now sharing with y'all :)

Q: What were the biggest dress trends from Bridal Fashion Week last month?

A: Short styles, non-traditional details and architectural draping.

Q: What is the single most important piece of advice you would give a bride-to-be when she's looking for her wedding dress?
A:Try on your "dream" gown, the one you've seen yourself in since childhood, but stay open to other possibilities. I've seen many brides come in with that dream dress idea, and walk out with their actual dream dress, which is sometimes the total opposite of what they thought. So, keep an open mind.

Q: If you're a a Recessionista Bride like I am, what are some things you can do to really dress up your wedding day look without breaking the bank?
A: You can always add a touch of color to your gown, with a sash, or in the actual gown. You can add a new or vintage brooch to the waist or bust line to add more detail and sparkle. You can opt for a gown with a bold rhinestone, or exquisite beading.

Q:What are some of the latest bridesmaid trends? Do you think it's okay for them to NOT match?
A: Short, short and short! Bridesmaids now are really looking for dresses they can look appropriate in at the wedding, but also really can wear again after the wedding day has passed. Our new Purely Alfred ANgelo fits this niche very well.
Yes, I think it's great if the bridesmaids don't match. It's a wonderful way for the bride to celebrate the individuality of each of her bridesmaids, and show her creativity and unique character. A popular trend is to keep the same color for your maids, but allow them to choose the best style/silhouette for themselves. I've seen some beautiful bridal parties that have done this.

Q: How important is it to consider your venue when choosing your wedding day look?
A: I'd say not too much. I think it's important that the bride definitely stand out among everyone and everything on her wedding day, including the venue. She shouldn't be swallowed up when she walks into the room. But, she also shouldn't take up every last inch of space in a room, figuratively. It's a careful balance, but most brides select the gown that is their dream dress, and the venue is all part of the dream and fantasy of her wedding day. So, she usually has a good idea of what will work for her venue regarding her gown when she begins shopping.
